Cabo whale watching at a glance
The humpback whale is one of the representative species of the protected area around Land's End. Whale watching in Cabo San Lucas is a seasonal activity, and no tour can promise a sighting. The animals decide, and the rules below decide how close a boat may go.
A boat trip to El Arco is a different outing from a whale trip. Normal boat visits to the arch are fine, but whale watching is restricted in the area around it. Read the section on the restricted zones before you choose a tour.

Our picks: whale watching
The hotel-transfer trip is the one with dock and protected-area fees included. The other two start at the marina, and with all three it depends on the season whether whales are around.

Whale season in Cabo San Lucas
What the dates mean for your trip.
The whale watching season for the Cabo San Lucas and San Josรฉ del Cabo protected area is set each year. The season for 2025/26 ran from 15 December 2025 to 30 April 2026, and the same dates applied to Cabo Pulmo and Los Frailes. Check the dates for winter 2026/27 before you book a flight around whales. Tour operators may run a shorter window, for example from 15 December to 15 April.
There is no single end date for all of Cabo. The season in the protected area, the operator's own window and the restricted zones can differ, so check the dates with the tour you want.
Viewing distances and restricted zones
The rules your boat has to follow.
| Rule | Limit |
|---|---|
| Distance to humpback and gray whales, small boats | At least 60 m |
| Distance to humpback and gray whales, medium and large boats | At least 80 m |
| Waiting boats | 240 m |
| Boats at the same time at one group of whales | Maximum 4 |
| Time at the same group of whales | Maximum 30 minutes |
| Distance to blue and fin whales | 100 m and 120 m |
| Restricted zone around El Arco | 2 km |
| Restricted strip on the eastern edge, seaward from Punta Ballenas | 1 km |
| Restricted coastal strip at Cabo Pulmo | 3.5 km |
For most visitors, the safest choice is a guided trip with a permitted operator that keeps to these limits. The restricted zones are for whale watching, not a ban on every boat in the area.
Permit
Operators need a permit for whale watching. Ask for it before you pay.
No chasing or feeding
Boats do not chase whales, feed them or separate a mother from her calf.
No swimming during the watch
Swimming, diving and fishing are not allowed while the boat watches whales.
Whales that move away
If a whale shows avoidance, the boat moves off.
What a whale watching tour costs in 2026
Two examples, per person.
| Option | Price per person | Dock fee | Included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deluxe | $98 instead of $115 | $3 extra | Land transfer, guide, non-alcoholic drinks |
| Glass-bottom version | $89 instead of $99 | $3 extra | Land transfer, guide, non-alcoholic drinks |
These are examples, not a market range. Ask for child prices when you book. Both examples include land transfer, a guide and soft drinks. Check what the Deluxe option adds for your date. Ask whether the protected area fee of 125 MXN per person and day is part of the price, because the dock fee does not show that.
Planning your day on the water
Three things to settle before you book.
Season and date
Pick a date inside the season for winter 2026/27 and confirm it with the tour.
Weather and sea
Boat tours depend on the weather and the sea. Choose a flexible booking and keep a spare day if you can.
Combine with the arch
If you also want El Arco, see the El Arco and Land's End guide. Lover's Beach has its own page at Lover's Beach.
